Final Paper

This assignment had several different elements to it, we first had to come up with an image of an exemplary product, and bring it in for interpretation. I chose the legendary Buck Knife, a product that has been around for over 100 years. The Buck Knife is nothing flashy, it has a simple, yet rugged design that has worked well and, in my opinion does not need to be changed. For the sake of this assignment, I was forced to “change” this all but perfect knife. This essay will describe my thought processes and ideas behind the changes.

In class, we presented drawings of our products and students commented on our work and gave us some potential ideas for change. Classmates said I should make the handle camouflage; I could not do that because I felt as if it would ruin the knife’s image. One student suggested I give it an ultra strong blade, similar to that of a Samurai sword; I liked that idea as I have snapped the blade on my Buck Knife. Another idea was to add a flashlight to the handle but again, I felt it would damage the integrity of the design. A classmate suggested adding an improved grip and I really liked that idea because the knife can get slippery after using it for cutting bait, gutting animals, etc. Some other ideas classmates suggested were attaching a lanyard to it, and adding a place for storage within it. I chose not to add the lanyard because it is relatively pointless for a folding knife, and the inner storage would weaken the structure of the knife.

The painting can be described with one word, huge. The paper we were given was much bigger than what was needed to paint a knife that is about 6 ½ inches when opened. Needless to say, the knife was not painted to scale. A challenge that arose was that I needed to cover the whole paper with both the product and a background. I had no idea what to do for the background, so I just started drawing thoughts into my sketchbook, and as I drew them, I was able to piece things together. I started with a nature scene with mountains and game animals, but I came to the conclusion that my drawing ability was not nearly that advanced. My next idea was the American Flag, I believe that would have looked great, but again my artistic abilities aren’t good enough and I CANNOT screw up my flag. I then came to the idea of BUCK in big bold lettering, a simple yet meaningful background.

Colors. Who would have thought picking colors could be such a pain. Certainly not me, I could not figure out what to do for colors, nor was I very good at mixing them into other colors. I eventually came up with some colors that I thought were adequate, the handle of the knife was a dark brown and a dark yellow that resembled gold. The blade of the knife was a grey/sliver combination. Without the help of the instructor, I would not have been able to mix the colors. The big bold letters were a dark green that, in my opinion, came out very well. The rest of the monstrous paper was covered in a maroon/dark red color.

The final challenge of this painting was a problem with shading. The handle of the knife kind of blended in with the rest of the painting. I did not know what to do about this, I felt that if I left it, it would have looked bad, but if I added a different color it too would have looked bad. I blended a mixture of white and yellow to create a bright yellow/white color and then proceeded to paint around the border of the handle. The knife now clearly is separate from the rest of the painting. Problem solved. This project was long, time consuming, and at some points down right frustrating, but in the end, I think it came out good.

Definitions

Pimp-1.) to pimp something out is to *make* it look very ghettofab and all that nifty stuff in the above paragraph.
2.) to pimp is to advertise (generally, in an enthusiastic sense) or to call attention in order to bring acclaim to something; to promote. Hack- Slang. to deal or cope with; handle: He can't hack all this commuting

Mod- To modify something. Usually refering to to the technically inclined
I gonna preform a case mod so I have a tricked out computer

Mash-up: To take elements of two or more pre-existing pieces of music and combine them to make a new song.

These definitions are all both similar and different in their own seperate ways, they all, more or less mean to change or "modify" something.

Photoshop Surrealistic Collage Assignment.

Meret Oppenheim’s fur cup is a very intriguing creation. It is a small plate, a spoon and a tea cup, pretty normal right? Wrong, these utensils are covered with what appears to be the fur of a whitetail deer. It is quite the contraption; it must have taken a lot of time and effort to hide the numerous seams so eloquently. The teacup and spoon sit atop the plate, carefully placed to show the brilliant craftsmanship.

There are several elements to this work of art, for instance the combination of delicate glassware and the skin of a wild, free, beautiful animal is simply ravishing. The display is so versatile; it could fit right in amongst a china cabinet or in a hunting lodge. Although there is no real purpose to this piece, it clearly could go almost anywhere. The principles of this design are those of thought, care, and intellect. The cup and spoon are carefully placed upon the plate.

There are many different interpretations and ideas that can come from this piece. My initial thoughts lead me to believe that; first, we cannot forget where we come from. Or in other words, we cannot forget that before we were able to have delicacies we had to work for everything. Essentially what I am trying to say here is that we cannot take for granted the luxuries we have in life. Secondly, I believe that we should respect different thoughts, opinions, and beliefs of others. Some people are not fond of the upper class and all the luxuries they get to indulge in, while others seem to hate the thought of killing an innocent animal. Through this piece of artwork, we can maybe take a step back and realize that everyone has their own beliefs and that although we may not agree with them, we must respect them.

Ekstasis Paper

This paper will explain in detail my impressions, views, and opinions of “The Sidewinder” that is on display in the art gallery of the Draper and Maynard building. It is a big, wooden contraption with wheels, a weird crankshaft, a welded axle with wheels attached to it and a long leather belt like attached to the back end of it. The wooden piece is about 7 to 8 feet long at its longest and is probably about 2.5 to 3 feet in diameter in the center. It has a shape that resembles a carrot; the tip of “The Sidewinder” is narrow in diameter.

In observing “The Sidewinder’s” body, I found that the crankshaft actually works, though I did not try to crank it, I saw that there is a chain that is similar to one you would find on a motorcycle. The crankshaft itself is composed of welded steel and is in the shape of the handle you would find on a spinner fishing reel. The handle of the crank is made of wood and is painted red. The crank is painted green, and is made of welded steel.

Now onto my opinion of this piece of work; in short, I think this is a useless waste of time and effort. I respect the fact that the person who built this put a lot of time and hard work into it, but I just don’t see it. I believe that this thing is pointless, there does not appear to be any practical use for this contraption. I have absolutely no idea why someone would put so much effort into something that can do next to nothing. I do know what it is like to put a lot of hard time to build something as I build houses for the family business when I am not up at school, but our houses have a legitimate purpose and use.
This, to me is pointless, I respect the effort and creativity the person put into this piece, but I just don’t get it. It may be harsh, but you asked for my opinion, so here it is.

Creativity

What is creativity? Creativity, in my opinion is expression of ones thoughts or ideas through an external source. This class will hopefully give me a clearer definition of creativity and how to express it.
